Apparently, You Can Have It All: A Life Update
Hi friends, and can I just say, welcome back. I’ve been MIA for quite some time. It turns out the year and a half I thought I would focus on my blog and social media became a year of quietly growing behind the screen. I don’t think COVID inspired anyone, especially me. My entire 24th year of life was full of rejection, disappointment, and worry. I was unemployed for over a year and questioned every single day what my purpose in life was. Was I even good at marketing, did I want to switch career paths, did I even like living in Madison. I thought that if I changed one of those things I might end up with some luck.
The Dream Job
Apparently, all I needed to do was turn 25. Two weeks after turning this magical age I had 2 job interviews, and I got an offer for both. One of them was a temp job which I immediately accepted. After working there for a week I got a full time job offer from Weyco Group based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It turns out my love of online shopping and shoes made me a perfect candidate for a merchandising and e-commerce associate. I’ve been working there since October and I absolutely love the brands we represent, the team I work with, and the work itself.
For 2 months I endured the worst commute of my life. I woke up at 5:00, left my house in Madison at 6 to arrive at work at 7:45. After work I’d leave the office at 4:30 and get home at 6. I’d make dinner, shower, and attempt to spend some quality time with Leia and Scott. But, with Scott coaching high school boys soccer, we rarely saw each other during the week. We knew this commute wasn’t going to be sustainable so we started looking at houses in Milwaukee.
The Dream Home
We scoured Zillow for houses in our budget that weren’t completely hideous. It was a competitive market. A house you saved 2 days ago was sold by the weekend. The day we went house hunting we saw 8 houses. I knew I wanted a short commute. If we were moving anyway, it may as well be close to my office. Scott works fully remote so he doesn’t have to worry about a commute. We wanted something move in ready, too. I love the idea of a fixer upper, but that would’ve been the perfect project during my unempoyment, not after getting a new job. As for me, I needed something with tons of natural light for content creation, and a house with character. If there’s one thing I hate about a house, it’s lack of personality.
Our second to last house was it for us. A house built in 1934 out of Lannon stone – native to this area of Wisconsin. This house had everything: three bedrooms, 2 full baths, wine fridge, and a fenced in backyard for Leia. We immediately put in an offer, not even remotely thinking we’d get it. Two days later we had an accepted offer. Since moving in November I’ve fallen even more in love with our house. It’s not perfect, it’s old and needs some love, but love is one thing I have plenty of to give. I’m looking forward to sharing our house progress on my new Instagram account & can’t wait to start on the landscaping this spring.
The Dream Man
Scott and I have been together for almost five years now. We were long distance for 3 of those years, and I’ve lived in 3 states and 5 cities during that time. Now that we both have stable jobs, a gorgeous house, and the best pup it finally felt like the right time to start thinking of marriage. On January 16, we were in Chicago, our favorite city, and Scott proposed in front of Buckingham Fountain. It was a complete surprise and I couldn’t help but say yes to our forever! I’m so excited to start planning our dream wedding and celebrate our love with our family and friends.
The first half of being 25 has been monumental, and I only see it getting better with home improvements, a 9 day trip to Italy, and of course planning our wedding.
