The Truth About Physical Compliments
Yesterday was the 4th annual Women’s March. I love being a woman, I really do. That doesn’t mean it’s all sunshine and rainbows. Body rights, equal pay, #MeToo…those are only some of the struggles we face today. Women are incredibly powerful, capable, strong, inspiring beings which got me thinking: why are we never described by these things, or judged by these things?
Being a woman comes with a lot of physical expectations. I’m not even going to point out one group of people that are guilty of this because we all are: men, the media, other women. We are constantly judging women based off looks alone. The truth is, it’s easier to pay attention to a physical attribute than an intangible one.
Here’s my challenge to you. The next time you comment on an Instagram photo, slide into a DM, or are chatting with your friends, find something about them that isn’t physical. You’ll be surprised by the result.
There’s a Time and a Place
Here’s my disclosure: there is a time and place for physical compliments. If your loved one took the time to get dressed up for you it’d be a great time to acknowledge that. If your girlfriend isn’t feeling pretty that day then it’s definitely the time to hype her up. My point is on the day to day there is so much more than physical compliments.
For example, after a long day of work tell your loved one how motivated they are, or driven, or how proud you are of their perseverance. There are so many more compliments that aren’t physical than physical ones. You can only call someone beautiful so many times, am I right?
