A Master Bedroom Upgrade

A Master Bedroom Upgrade

I’m a very aesthetic person. I like the rooms in my house to reflect a certain “vibe”: cozy, inviting, relaxing. When I moved in with Scott I had no uncertainty about his main floor meeting these expectations. The master bedroom however, had me in a panic.

Walking into the bedroom you immediately knew that a bachelor resided in this room. Scott opted for a slate blue wall color, had dark curtains drawn 24/7, and the bare minimum décor wise. It felt very masculine, and I was scared that it would never really suit my preferences. That being said, the master bedroom is now my favorite room in the house! It has undergone an intense décor transformation, and the slate blue walls live to see another day.

Preloved Furnishings

Scott’s bedroom used to include a bed, no headboard or footboard, a dresser from his childhood, and a nightstand. The space is HUGE and it needed to be better used. I knew moving in that my furniture from my apartment was going in the guest room. So, we needed a bedroom set that had a dresser for me. We lucked out and found a midcentury style set that included a headboard, footboard, and two dressers for $100 on Facebook Marketplace. It was in rough shape, but I stripped and refinished it all by myself!

The pieces turned out to be the perfect mixture of masculine and feminine. I opted for a deep walnut stain which adds to the cozy factor of the bedroom. The hardware is original, just needed a scrub and I love the distressed gold finish. The headboard and footboard are actually full size, but we bought a kit on Amazon that enabled it to work for a queen. Touches of brass ornaments give the space an air of sophistication and subtle glam.

Framing The Focal Point

The bed sits in the middle of the room, so the eye is naturally drawn there. While the newly added head & footboard, and fresh linens were a huge improvement, there was still work to be done. There was one lone nightstand on my side of the bed. It didn’t match the furniture I redid and was a different style all together. Scotts dad is an incredible carpenter, so I asked him to make us some floating nightstands. He used some old oak and built gorgeous nightstands that exceeded my expectations. They are still midcentury, but the worn wood gives them a softer appearance.

I love to read in bed, but my lamps were so far away from the bed. Traditional lamps would take up too much space on the nightstands so we opted for wall sconces. These plug into the wall so we didn’t have to do any wiring. The brushed brass finish is the perfect pop against the dark wall and white quilt. The round globes are midcentury without having harsh lines, and they rotate which is perfect for reading in bed.

The last touch for the space was a pop of color, and something to draw the eye upward. My sister, Christy, is an incredible artist. My parents house is full of her canvases. So, I asked her to paint me something for Christmas this year. She incorporated all the tones of the room into a vibrant floral.

Final Accents

Based off my last post, you know I love thrifting. All of my finishing touches in the master bedroom are thrifted. From my vintage frame gallery wall, to the trays and old books. My mom found me a vintage trinket box and vintage powder container that I keep on my dresser. One of my vintage swung vases holds a dried flower that adds heights to my dresser. Brass lamps add ambiance to the corners of the room. My cute little recovered chair adds another “space” to the room, and is the best spot to curl up with tea and read.

This room encountered one of the biggest makeovers when I moved in. It seemed so daunting with the dark color and lack of hominess. Now it feels like a little oasis away from chores like doing the dishes or the chaos of a puppy.
